Tokyo Metropolitan University
University’s presentation
Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) is a public university founded in 1949 and primarily funded by the Government of Tokyo. Through scholarships, it is committed to pioneering the future of the world by contributing to the social, cultural, economic, and technological vitality of Tokyo and beyond. We continually strive to innovate in education and research across a wide range of disciplines, emphasizing close interactions between faculty and students.
TMU currently comprises seven academic divisions both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, 13 prominent research institutes, and a herbarium with the vast collection of plant specimens collected by Dr. Tomitaro Makino, the “Father of Japanese Botany.” TMU is home to approximately 650 faculty members and over 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all around the world, making TMU’s campus community diverse and intellectually stimulating.
TMU is highly ranked by research citations in several world university rankings, and boasts a number of internationally acclaimed and award-winning scholars, including Dr. Haruo Inoue, Senior Leading Professor, recipient of the Porter Medal for his contribution to the science of photochemistry, and Dr. Nobutaka Ono, who was named in the AI 2000 Most Influential Scholar Annual List. Partnerships with the Government of Tokyo enable TMU to pursue high-quality, cutting-edge research. In 2020, TMU rolled out Japan’s biggest local 5G network over its campuses, as part of the “‘Future of Tokyo’ Strategy” proposed by the Government, specifically contributing to the vision of a “Smart Tokyo” that harnesses Tokyo's full potential for its residents using digital technology. Faculty research is extensively and effectively integrated into academic courses, generating positive synergies between research and teaching. TMU students across disciplines benefit from the unique opportunities and resources offered by such research-teaching synergies.
