South-Central Minzu University (SCMZU) is a comprehensive university under the direct leadership of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People’s Republic of China. Located on the shore of the South Lake in Wuhan, home to the ‘White Clouds and Yellow Cranes’, SCMZU is also an institution of higher learning jointly built by the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, Hubei Provincial Government and Wuhan Municipal Government.
SCMZU covers a ground area of over 1,550 mu and boasts a building area of more than one million square meters.
SCMZU has more than 29,000 students from all 56 ethnic groups in China, including full-time preparatory students, undergraduates, master’s students, and doctorate students. SCMZU has four doctoral programs of first-level disciplines; 25 academic master programs of first-level disciplines, and 20 professional master programs. SCMZU has 82 undergraduate programs, covering 10 major disciplines.
SCMZU has been approved 52 first-level undergraduate programs (24 of which are national level programs). With its Environmental Engineering program obtaining the professional certification for engineering education, SCMZU has been granted 4 national ‘new engineering’ programs, 5 ‘new agricultural’ programs, and 4 ‘new humanities’ programs. SCMZU has 9 national first-level undergraduate courses and two ministerial-level Ideological and Political Theory demonstration courses. In January 2018, SCMZU was listed in the ‘National First-Class University’ in Hubei Province, with its three disciplines of Ethnology, Chemistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences recognized as ‘National First-class Discipline’. In 2017, the discipline of Ethnology was approved as an A-category discipline in the discipline appraisal by the Ministry of Education. The disciplines of Chemistry, Engineering, and Material Science rank top 1% globally according to Essential Science Indicator.
SCMZU has more than 2200 faculty and staff, 1400 full-time teachers, while 60% of the full-time teachers are PhDs. Having a team of Huang Danian Type Teachers, who are with high-quality and innovation-driven professionals, SCMZU has brought in and cultivated a bunch of top talents such as the ‘National Outstanding Youths’, ‘National Excellent Youths’, and teachers included in the national ‘10,000 Talent Initiative’. During recent five years, SCMZU was granted 301 national scientific research projects, 36 of which are major/key projects. SCMZU had publish 815 CSSCI papers, 1,372 SCI papers, and 279 high-level academic monographs. SCMZU was approved 498 authorized invention patents, won 122 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards, formulated 1 international standard for Chinese herbal medicine mugwort leaf. SCMZU’s Hubei Institute of Building an All-round Well-off Society was selected into ‘China’s Core Think Tank’ in 2017. SCMZU has established a ‘National Science and Technology Business Incubator’, a National Demonstration Base of ‘Internet + Chinese Civilization’. SCMZU ranked 86th in terms of quantities of published CSSCI papers in 2019. SCMZU’s natural index ranked at 124th place in 2020. SCMZU’s Humanity and Social Sciences Edition and Natural Sciences Edition of its journal were both listed as A class for the RCCSE China Core Academic Journal.
SCMZU’s influence has kept increasing over time. In 2012, SCMZU was approved to establish a National Demonstration Center for Teacher Development. In 2001, 2006, and 2016 respectively, SCMZU obtained top grades in the appraisal of undergraduate education by the Ministry of Education. In August 2017, SCMZU was honored as ‘National Demonstration University for Deepening Reform in Innovation-driven and Entrepreneurship-oriented Education’. In September 2017, SCMZU’s achievements in talent development were selected into the major exhibition of achievements ‘Five Years of Sheer Endeavor’ by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China.
SCMZU has established relationships of exchanges and cooperation with more than 70 universities overseas, while having deep cooperation with dozens of domestic universities such as Wuhan University and Chongqing University by a way of joint development, exchanges, and mutual visits.

The Business Administration major is designed to provide professional students with broad education across all the key aspects of business environment as preparation for a variety of positions in the government sectors, enterprises, or institutions involved with China trade. A solid basis is provided to develop interests in the business fields including economics, laws and enterprise management, acquaint with the characteristics of Chinese enterprises and market economy, and cultivate creative and practical talents with global vision.
